The Context of the Outside

The center is closed, and the website is therefore no longer being updated.

Dave Hullfish Bailey is an artist based in Los Angeles, where he teaches in the Fine Art Department at Art Center College of Design.

He will present materials and questions from his current artistic research, which concerns place-based pedagogy, speculative associations and experimental methods for the articulation of geographical knowledges. His current study object, the 1960s countercultural community of 'Drop City', in southern Colorado, USA, explicitly privileged integrative, holistic thinking yet was then, and remains now, largely narrated through the decontextualizing ideology of other utopian 'blank slates'. Through reading of the historical site of Drop City against larger arcs--previous land uses as well as nonhuman ecologies--Bailey provides a case study in the material and cultural embeddedness of thought and living experiments, and poses questions regarding the relation of littoral space to 'outside' thinking.

Participants will contribute to a collective mapping of Aarhus which embraces granular description as well as remote networks.
